Thinking of having a picnic?

Sometimes when we try out something new we don't know if its a good idea or not or if it will take off.

Take this new Picnic Cool Bag that we've just had in for example. Its something we've never done before but I think its so in keeping of what we're all about.

The benefits of this cool bag is that its the shiny silver lining inside will keep your sarnies nice and cool. There's one feature that I particularly like, its the fact there's a compartment for storing your wine!

See, we have tried it ourselves and for me thats a winner!

And the other thing that make's it even more of a winner is that its only £20!

As you can imagine for that price, they are flying out, even when there's still a wintry feel outside.

I would say if you're starting to get ready for summer and longing for those long evenings on the beach then this is an ideal thing to have and there's a WINE compartment!!

I'm back after a week off and whats the goss?? Anyone?

Well apparently none! Its like I've never been away!

And it did go rather quick and now I'm back in my little shop, it feels like I've never been away!

Well what did I do on my week off? I went and visited Bude for the day where GulBude looked after me with curly fries and cups of tea (Thanks Cai, pasty is on me when you're next down here!).

And I then ventured down to St Ives as I haven't been down there since I was a mere nipper and thought this was the ideal time to go down and have a look - lovely little town but just a pity it was bucketing it down so I couldn't see much of this obviously pretty little town but I did sample the Gul shop though! And saw a seal bobbing about in the sea!

One thing I did do quite a bit whilst on my week off, was a lot of walking and taking pictures of the lovely view I have literally on my door step...

...isn't it lovely?

They happened to be watching a documentary on BBC4 the other day called Wild Swimming and the lady, Alice Roberts, was actually wearing one of our wetsuits! A Vortex in fact!

Can you believe it was a week ago it was New Years Day? A start of another new year?

No nor can we!

After the usual busyness of Christmas and the celebrations of

New Year, January can feel somewhat flat, lifeless and not much to look forward to other than payday!

You're certainly not alone there but we here in Padstow are on hand to uplift your spirits as we still have a brilliant sale with the raise of the new VAT not affecting it one little bit.

And just think we're a few steps closer to those longer, bright evenings with the promise of summer and I know we're all longing for that!

I had a wonder around the harbour earlier today to see if it is as deadly quiet as it feels.

Even though its so bitterly cold outside you can not beat it when its like this. Cold and everything so still with the sun shining-what a perfect day. I think this poem sums it right up:

The Winter Sun

Hangs low in the sky

The navy blue sea

Sparkles in the sunlight

The trees are silhouetted

Shafts of lights shining through

Their barren branches

Frosty nights leave icing

Covered lawns and cobwebs

The winter sun

Pale and watery

Hardly warming the hard earth

But welcome like an old friend,

On this cold winter day.

And yes it is as deadly quiet as it seems but perfect for Christmas shopping don't you think?

A get together with Reef...

Last Friday the managers at Gul all got together to go and see Reef play in Truro.

Reef was the first concert I ever went to 12 years ago and I was interested to see how they had aged now.

Well I can tell you now that they haven't lost it one bit! They were brilliant!

We even had the opportunity to meet the band and this is when I became quite star struck as in my head all I could think about was that Reef were there right in front of me! At one point I couldn't even look at them - that's how star struck I was!

I somehow got over being this silly and managed to get a photo taken with the main man himself, Gary Stringer and do you know what, they were all so nice and didn't seem all that put out when all I could do was mumble!

Well I supposed they're used to meeting people like me - mumbling, star struck idiots!

If you ever get a chance to see this band and you can remember all the classics then go and see them as I guarantee you will reliving your youth and jumping round with the best of them!

A week to go...

Well its one week today until our Christmas Festival and it promises to be good!

From Santa and his to Reindeer to a Beer Festival, there's something for everyone!

Also the harbour is going to be covered in REAL snow!!

But if the weathers anything to go by at the moment, we might actually have real real snow by then!

On the Friday it is Late Night Christmas Shopping with many shops open till around 8pm offering all sorts of discounts (we're offering a staggering 25% on all Gul Products for the entire weekend) and a glass of wine and a mince pie chucked in! And its only £1 a go, all proceeds go to a worthy course.

We're also doing a Raffle to raise money for the RNLI, you could win a £50 voucher!

All in all it sounds like a good weekend and what better way to get your Christmas Shopping all wrapped up!

Space Hopper saves the day

Who said you can only bounce around like a loon on a Space Hopper?
It turns out that, other than being my most treasured possession in the bygone days, our beloved 70's toy can be used to save lives... it's true.
Whilst driving to work this morning I heard on the news that 2 teenage girls, who were swept off a sea wall in Exmouth, were saved from their watery predicament with the aid of one such smiling, orange bag of wind.

Space Hopper, my dear old friend, you have every reason to be grinning like a Cheshire cat!

Well Done!

(Although, personally, I would recommend a Buoyancy Aid or Life Jacket to keep you safe whilst around the water! Both, of which, can be purchased from your local friendly Gul store ;o) )

Ghost Towns

It is very quiet in Padstow today, almost ghostly, so whilst contemplating this fact my mind slipped back to a documentary I watched the other day about the abandoned village of Hallsands in Devon. This small fishing community was destroyed by storms in January 1917, after the Admiralty dredged its shingle to extend Plymouth Dockyard.

A sad tale of lost livelihoods, homes and more importantly community, but thankfully no fatalities in this instance.
Whilst investigating some pictures of this village for you to look at I stumbled across some more 'Ghost Towns' from around the world - bizarre to say the least that these places have simply, for whatever reason, been deserted.
Entire seaside resorts left abandoned;

Varosha, Cyprus

Tohoku, Japan

Chippewa Lake Park, OH

and, according to Googlemaps, a town that for all intents and purposes exists - yet doesn't... and never has! Go on... Google it, you can find all sorts of data on it, and yet it never was!

Having observed these poor, sad and lonely places I have come to realise that Padstow, although not a bustling metropolis today is, however, alive - and for that we can be grateful. No matter how quiet it gets, it is by no means a ghost town, it has life, it has blood in it's veins, it has a heart.

Wedding socks

I was a bridesmaid at a wonderful wedding this weekend at Watergate Bay and it was all quite emotional.

As the lovely groom was signing the register, he caught my eye and flash me his socks!! He was only wearing the Gul socks I had given him for Christmas on his special day!!

He also said he would be flying the flag for Gul by wearing his Gul clothes whilst they are honeymooning in Vietnam and Hong Kong!

What a memorable, wonderful day! Glad to have been part of it.

Weather Lore

As I stood outside my front door last night taking some snapshots of the brilliant reds and oranges the sunset produced, I found myself muttering the old folklore my Mum told me so many years ago:

On throwing back the curtains this morning, I wasn't surprised to find a truly spectacularly glorious October day awaiting me. Proving, on this occasion, these lores do have a modicum of truth surrounding them.

I was curious to find out how, and why, this particular 'Weather Lore' came about and whilst munching on my lunch I decided to do a little research and found that, to my surprise, this particular gem dates back to the Bible.

Matthew 16:2-3

He said, “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be fair weather, because the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, because the sky is red and darkening.’ You know how to judge correctly the appearance of the sky, but you cannot evaluate the signs of the times.

Apparently the reasoning behind this saying is due to the fact that weather systems generally move from West to East. In a nutshell; If the morning skies are red, it is because clear skies to the east permit the sun to light the undersides of moisture-bearing clouds coming in from the west. On the other hand, in order to see red clouds in the evening, sunlight must have a clear path from the west in order to light 'damp' clouds moving to the east.... Simples!!!! I Don't Believe It!

I don't, and can't, believe it - yesterday gave us rain, wind and generally all-round miserableness but the people came in droves. Today, on the other hand, brings bright sunshine and warmth but it appears the mist stole the people in the night.

I'm unsure as to why this phenomenon has occurred, it's like something from a cheesy horror movie.

I don't understand it. We have lots to offer here:

Coming like a ghost town??

As the summer season suddenly looms on us here in Padstow, we decided a little night out was needed.

We even glammed up for the occasion and went to a great little restaurant in Wadebridge called the Bridge Bistro, even though we weren't at work we did somehow manage to do a little bit of schmoozing with people who don't realise that we're here in Padstow.

Lets just say the wine was flowing!! And the Pimms!

We here at Gul would never like to get on the wrong side of anyone and least of all our neighbouring competitors.
Whilst we would never condone such childish acts as nicking Monkeys or Seaguls in order to give us some entertainment, we still wouldn't want to upset or land the good people we see opposite every morning into trouble as feel we have a good working relationship with these people.

So now we will be looking elsewhere for our little challenges! Oh where could we go?? White Stuff maybe?!

What is there to do in Padstow?

What is there to do in Padstow? Well I've often wondered myself so I took it upon myself to check the place out!

And do you know I found loads!

I popped into the Lobster Hatchery to have a look at all the lobsters! They come in all sorts of sizes and looks! Really interesting and the people in there are really friendly and welcoming.

Then I saw that you can hire a bike and cycle to Wadebridge or if you really wanted you could cycle all the way to Bodmin where there's a pub at the end of it! That would encourage me to cycle all that way!

I had a wonder around the beautiful harbour and notice this big boat called the Jubilee Queen, this takes you all around offshore islands and even to Puffin Island and sometimes,depending on the tide, it takes you as far as Wadebridge.

If you wanted to go at a faster pace why not hop on a speed boat? These are called Jaws, Sea Fury, Thunder and Fireball! Not quite sure why they are called these scary names but don't let that put you off! These boats take you around the coast, as far as Polzeath, at about 30 mph! If you don't know where to go to get these, keep a listen out for the man bellowing 'Sea Fury' and he sometimes says something funny like 'Scream if you want to go faster me lover!

If you wanted a slower pace why not hop on the ferry to Rock and pretend you have a million pound house! You never know you might spot a super star there ! Martin Clunes and Harry Enfield are often spotted there and even Princes Harry and William sometimes frequent the place.

As you know Cornwall is famous for its Pastys and Cream Teas, Padstow has a great selection and you'd be hard push to know what to choose. Or if you here for a while why not try them all?! Why not, you're on holiday! Indulge a little and worry about it later!

Well if that's not what you're after then why don't you try the local fish? Yeah everyone goes to Rick Steins as its the thing to do but I like Chip Ahoy, they are just as good if not better dare I say. As you can tell from the pictures I enjoyed my chips!

And plus you're guaranteed a bit of banter with the lovely owners which I think makes it. In the winter you can sit outside with your chips and wrap yourself up in cosy blankets, which are provided.

Be careful of the Seaguls as they are likely to try and nick ya chips! So be vigilant of the little beggars!

If that hasn't finished you off, pop over to Harbour Ice where you can either have an enormous ice cream or like me you like a bit of Navy Rum Ice cream but you will be asked for ID which the owners find hilarious!

So you see there is rather a lot to do in sunny Padstow but there is one thing that you have to do whilst you're in Padstow! No that doesn't mean visiting all the Rick Steins shops that are dotted about!

That is pop into the Gul Shop! If you don't you'll be missing out!

As you can see the Night Surf was a massive success again this year and the weekend couldn't of been more perfect, sun, sea and surf!

But theres one bit of the night that I really remember and that is seeing the Manager from Bude dancing! Somehow i can't quite get that image out of my head!

Oh if only I had pictures of this! Only hazy memories!

Well I decided that I had some time on my hands the other day and decided to pay Bude a visit to actually see what the fuss is all about!

And I didn't need a homemade Tom Tom to get there!

I took the A39 rather than the A30 to get to sunny Bude and I'm quite glad I did as I went through some pretty villages like Camelford and other funny named villages like Box's Shop or this could be the other way round I can't remember but I felt I was on holiday myself with the sun shining and the wind in my hair as I sped along!

The reason I went to Bude as Cai, the shop manager, is always banging on about how much better it is than Padstow which I always beg to differ on several occasions!

Bude has defiantly got charm with the river at the bottom and quaint little shops but the best thing about the place is that it has a Gul Store smack bang in centre of where its all happening!

The Gul Shop in Bude has got everything you need from great fashion to whatever you need to get out into that water!

Although Gul Bude is a lovely shop with its own little charm, I can't help but compare it to the lovely and slightly better (!) Gul Padstow but one thing that I am slightly envious is the size of their stock room!

I think they could defiantly swing that big cat which Cai thinks he saw in that stock room!

This little trip has made me want to explore this area more like visit Tintagel, Boscastle and even to visit all the other Gul Stores!

We set ourselves the challenge and we thought it might take us ages to attempt it but noooo it took us 2 minutes!

Yep its the crew at Fat Face who we have yet again targeted but feel it was very apt for us!

They have a seaside theme at the moment which they have seaguls doted around the shop.

Yes you've guessed it we've swooped in and nicked a seagul!

Childish? us? yes you're right but its all in the name of a challenge!Lets see how long we can keep it for!

Like to add though that we don't condone nicking anything out of shops even though it is a seagul.

It is getting better as we have a Spring Sale here in our little store.

Well they noticed in the end, they came matching over and yanked Vicky the monkey from our window!

I did yell back 'We've had it all night!!

We're on to a next challenge which is unknown but we'll let you know when one arises!

We have the monkey!!

Yes I know this is pretty petty but we here in Padstow gave ourselves a little challenge to try and nick the blow up monkey that Fat Face have in their window, put it in our window and wait and see if they notice!

Pretty hard challenge as the staff of Fat Face are very observant but we have done it and now lets see if they will notice!

Easter Sunday fun and games...

Lots of things were happening in Padstow on Easter Sunday from the Egg rolling competition with lots of decorated boiled eggs, the sun coming out to our local bobby admitting he likes Gul clothing!

As a Easter surprise we even got a cuddle with an owl!! He made our day!
